about

This song was started during the "Into The Shadow Of Death" recording session in 2016. We were awed by IMMOLATION's riffs in "Harnessing Ruin". The original version started with the acoustic strumming which was pushed to the end of the second phase of the song. This time round, we decided to start the song without the acoustic strumming. We were happy with this choice because the beginning riff, played that way, sounded almost exactly like DIO's "Holy Diver"! And then the following riffs really made us sound like the American black death metal bands of the early 90s. Sounds like IMMOLATION and ABSU playing together in the same room and we secretly copied the resulting sound.

The song was only completed on the day we were recording the guide tracks. We have a collection of riffs which didn't belong to any songs, usually hanging without beginning or ending. We decided to use a riff which was hummed into the recorder, comprising of two sets of four notes. As soon as we added that old riff, the next two riffs suddenly came to mind. And just like that we completed the song. We decided to let the first half of the song drag before the next part comes in. It became our favourite song because, other than the "Holy Diver"-esque riff, the middle part really made us sound like an early 90s death metal band in our prime!

We had wanted to write a song about "barzakh". "Barzakh" is a dimension in the afterlife which has not been accurately understood. For a long time, we had understood "barzakh" to refer to a physical place where the dead returns to life to proceed with the routines of the afterlife. But we learnt that "barzakh" also means "barrier" which separates a dimension into two, which is why we also threw in the term "quantum". When we read further about "barzakh", it also refers to the separation of soul from the body, therefore the physical dimension and the soul dimension.

We figured that the third riff from the first phase of the song had to be the chorus. The original title of the song was "Transcending Barzakh" which we felt was enough to send the message across. But we needed to spread out that title over the 4 repetitions of the riff. So we added "the quantum realm" into the line.

The idea for lead-in growls before the vocals come in was us up to our mischief. Back when we were recording the songs for "Supreme Brutal Legions" split CD, we annoyed the sound engineer with all our impossible ideas that we wanted to force into the mixing process. Those lead-in growls was about us reminiscing the "Supreme Brutal Legions" recording session.

lyrics

TRANSCENDING THE QUANTUM REALM OF BARZAKH

So the soul begins the ascension
The flesh begins the descension
The faith faces the questions
Eternal wait in trepidation

The end has begun – this is sakaratul maut
Dark face approaches – this is su’ul khatimah
“O wicked soul! – come face His wrath and fury”
Entrapped with force – the rotten shrouds of coarse wool

Transcending – the quantum realm – of Barzakh

So the soul is paraded to the heavens
Crucified by the insults of the angels
“This is among the people of the Sijjin!”
“Cast his soul back to his decaying flesh!”

The torture begins – as the grave strangles his body
Narrow and constricted – as his ribs intertwined
Reveal to him Hell – let the flames unleash its fury
A vision approaches – the manifest of evil deeds

Transcending – the quantum realm – of Barzakh

Lifeless and limp – but conscious within – tortured in coma
Questions unheard – silence response – muted in trauma
Battered and whipped – bludgeoned to pulp – begging for mercy
They will not cease – they will not rest – they show no mercy

Farewell – to earthly life
Welcome – to the afterlife
Suspended – in the Barzakh
Summoned – by Zabaniah

Lifeless and limp – but conscious within – the pain is forever
Questions unheard – silence response – your deeds made you suffer
Battered and whipped – bludgeoned to pulp – shredded to pieces
They will not cease – they will not rest – hell on their faces

Approach – definite Kiamat
Crawl on – infinite Sirat
Labyrinths – of the Barzakh
All paths – lead to Jahannam

Feel the chains tightening on all four limbs
Feel the heat of Jahannam above him
Feel the flames of Jahannam around him
Feel the thorns of Zaqqum piercing within

The hordes of losers – lost themselves in Barzakh
Hell revealed – deny their destination
Await their fate – regret in desperation
Torture eternal – Jahannam burns forever

Transcending – the quantum realm – of Barzakh x 3
